Artist statement
With a studio based in the North East of Scotland, my work is inspired by the dramatic landscapes and seascapes which surround me. The unique textiles I design and make are created by blending heritage craft techniques with contemporary design.
Hand weaving with natural fibres on multi-shaft looms, workshops, rug tufting and natural dyeing.
Extended Bio
After completing a degree in Design for Textiles at university in both Scotland and Finland, my textile practice has developed to encompass design, sustainability and a strong message of environmental protection.
The handwoven Arra Textiles collection of interior and wearable designs launched in 2016 with the Textile Artworks following in 2022 at Collect Open. The designs for both aspects of my practice have become known for colour, complex woven design and a connection to place.
The everyday, Arra Textiles collection compromise of a colourful range of designs for the home and body. Each piece is a limited edition or one off and has been hand woven with sustainably sourced natural fibres.
When weaving the artworks, I blend a self-taught heritage tapestry weaving style with contemporary digital woven design, creating an image within an image with complex structures echoing throughout the woven landscapes. Each unique, site specific piece belongs to a location based capsule collection with raw materials, dye plants and inspiration coming from the lands which they depict.
