Artist statement
I create vibrant, semi-abstract paintings and mixed-media sculptures inspired by local wildlife. Through my work, I share my love of nature, encouraging a deeper connection to the natural world and its protection. This year, I'm thrilled to showcase my process at the WDC Scottish Dolphin Centre - an ideal space that shares my passion for conservation.
Extended Bio
Having honed my skills as a traditional realist artist for over 20 years, I realized that there was more to wildlife painting than just replicating what I saw. I wanted to go beyond mere representation to capture not just the physical appearance of animals but also their spirit and energy. This led me to explore the realm of semi-abstract art, where I can express the essence of wildlife through vibrant colours, and unconventional techniques.
Working in mixed media, I combine various materials such as acrylics, oils, pastels, and inks to create textured and layered artworks that bring nature to life in unexpected ways.
My paintings begin with intuitive mark-making. I have particular affection for the creatures inhabiting Scotland so they are often the most familiar shapes I find in the paint. Once I’ve identified my subject in these random marks, I work to bring out form and detail, drawing on previous experience to create a balance between abstract and realism.
Inspired, as always, by my love of wildlife I have also begun a journey into the world of 3D art.
For many years I have created props for fancy dress costumes and as a child I made my own dolls house and accessories out of household items. I've stitched and embroidered and knitted (badly). I've cut, I've glued and I've wired. Yet, never before have I presented this part of myself in my work as an artist.
Recently, I have been finding way to express my own particular style of art in a more sculptural way. So far this has included needle-felt and hand-painted polymer clay creations. Each one individually hand crafted to be one off pieces.
