Artist statement
Nature, history and Celtic art inspire my leather journals, bags and purses, wristbands and homeware. During NEOS week the studio will be busy as usual, with much for you to see and do. Browse ongoing leather projects and processes and have a go at some leatherwork yourself, using materials and tools typical of this ancient craft.
Extended Bio
I have been a leathersmith for over twenty years, learning my craft from a master saddler in Alberta, Canada. In the early days I concentrated on journals, kilt belts and patches for bikers. But since then, my skills have increased and I now produce a wide range of items from books to bowls; buttons to director's chairs; kilt belts to key fobs. Leather is very versatile and, with a deep respect for leather as my principal material and a firm belief in the 'nose to tail' principle, it is a pleasure to work with. Starting with the initial drawings, on through carving, adding colour and finally stitching and polishing, every intricate step in the process is my favourite.
Much of my work focuses on animals, birds and flowers, with a good sprinkling of Celtic knotwork and Tribal art. Inspiration comes from many places and I especially love working on commissions. They are a great way to blend someone else’s vision with my skill to produce something special that is one of a kind.
Now it's time to pass on my skills and so workshops make up a really enjoyable part of what I do. All my workshops are bespoke and run by appointment, so a date and time can be chosen that is mutually convenient.
