I have always been drawn to landscape and seascapes. Here in the north east of Scotland we are spoilt with the colours that can change hourly in the fields and skies that bring light and texture to this part of the world. Having an interest in local history I love to draw on previous events that may have occurred in certain settings and to find forgotten places. This year I have been looking at the coastal history that surrounds our lighthouses which has brought me to shipwrecks and smuggling. Using acrylics, charcoal and pastels and my new love, lino cutting I have been using this history as a starting point in creating an image whilst looking beyond the picture-perfect.
I like to create work that uses colour and texture to communicate an atmosphere on the canvas. For me, the creative process is a very personal experience. My work methods vary as sometimes I will start with sketching down ideas before deciding on the composition of a final piece and other times I work more intuitively, painting directly onto the canvas, letting the paint take me on a journey.
